Interagency Safety and Health Reporting Processes

The Safety and Health Working Team (SHWT) utilizes safety and health reporting processes to highlight trends as one component within an overall Risk Management Program. The SHWT utilizes many different models, processes, and reports to conduct trend analysis in an effort to identify preventative measures. The purpose of interagency reporting is to provide firefighters and Fire and Safety Program Managers with a comprehensive view of real-time and the previous year’s statistics that can be used to improve firefighter safety.

In addition to agency accident reporting requirements, the NWCG reporting processes are:

  • Safety Gram: http://www.nwcg.gov/teams/shwt/safetygram2.htm
Member agencies shall report fatalities, entrapments, burnovers, and other serious accidents associated with wildland fire.
  • SAFENET: http://safenet.nifc.gov/
This is a form and process used by wildland firefighting agencies for reporting and resolving incidents relating to firefighter safety.
  • SAFECOM: https://www.safecom.gov/
The Aviation Safety Communiqué (SAFECOM) database fulfills the Aviation Mishap Information System (AMIS) requirements for aviation mishap reporting for the Department of Interior agencies and the U.S. Forest Service.
  • I-Suite Injury/Illness Module: http://isuite.nwcg.gov/
Real-time injury/illness reporting for managed incidents.

The SHWT has created a new trend analysis report. To view the 2008 Risk Management Summary go to: http://www.nwcg.gov/teams/shwt/index2.htm.

The NWCG encourages the wildland fire community to utilize these reporting processes. The overall goal is to develop a strong reporting culture that enhances firefighter safety and wellness.
