| National Fire Messaging Project ------NWCG
Funds utilized - $0
The National Fire Messaging Task group comprised of three team members
and a representative from the Fire Use Working Team. While no funds
were allocated for FY 2005, the group completed contracted projects
that began and were obligated in FY2004. Previously,
the Task Group worked with Fleishman Hillard to develop a long-term
communication plan to build public acceptance of the role of fire
in ecosystems, garner support for wildland fire efforts, and reinforce
personal responsibility of those living in fire-prone ecosystems.

National Fire Prevention and Education Teams ----- NWCG
Funds utilized - $106,000
$106,000 was utilized in this final year of a three year contract
to incorporate the National Fire Prevention and Education Team (NFPET)
program into the national mobilization and resource systems. The
NFPET Team Member course (P310) is in its final stages of completion.
The NFPET Team Leader course will be completed in FY06. Ten teams
were dispatched this year to various assignments including assignments
related to the recent hurricanes.
Publication placement at symbols.gov ----- NWCG Funds utilized
- $9000
The WFEWT arranged for the distribution of the NWCG – Making
a Difference brochure at the National Symbols Cache in Grand Rapids,
MN utilizing $7500 in funding. The Fire Messaging Materials CD was
also duplicated and placed for distribution at the cache with $1500
in funds. The National Symbols cache also distributes: The Communicators
Guide to Wildland Fire (both CD and print version) and the Wildland
Fire in the United States brochure.
Sign and Poster Guide NWCG Funds utilized - $0
The WFEWT sponsored the development of an interagency Wildland Fire
Prevention Sign and Poster Guide. The Forest Service funded
this project ($5,000) which was completed and is available
in the PMS System.
Prevention and Communicators Guides Update ----- NWCG Funds
utilized - $79,400
This project is ongoing and the funding is obligated for completion
in FY06. This project will utilize a contractor to review and update
the 13 Fire Prevention Guides and the Wildland Fire Communicators
Guide. This is being coordinated with the revision of the P101 course
in order to utilize the updated materials in the revision of the
course. Draft updates of both products are to be completed by May
2006.
National Team Announcements ----- NWCG Funds utilized -
$0
During the year, the team sent three announcements to the field
through the e-mail network regarding issues that the team worked
on. These announcements were: Availability of the new publication,
Sign and Poster Guide; Did You Know: Update and Highlights from
the Communicator’s guide to Wildland Fire; and the availability
of the Fire Messaging Materials CD.
Training development
Following up the team’s FY2004 effort to identify national
prevention training needs, the team initiated plans to revise one
training course P101 and is actively involved in the current revision
of S-203. S-203 is being revised with the Training Development Group
and the Training WT funding and will be completed in FY2007.
P101 ----- NWCG Funds utilized - $40,000
This project is ongoing and the funding is obligated for completion
in FY2006. A contractor is working with The Task Group and the Training
Development group to revise and update this course. Currently, the
alpha test course is scheduled for early CY2006 with the beta test
course following in mid-year. The course revision should be completed
by late in CY2006.
Meetings ----- NWCG Funds utilized - $4130
The team met two times in FY2005- October 2004, Fresno, CA; and
May 2005, Boise, ID – and held six phone conferences. The
team spent $4130 on State Travel.
Team members also represented the WFEWT in the following areas:
the interagency fire prevention coordinators group (NIFC CORE group);
the Backyards and Beyond Conference; and served as liaisons to the
other working teams.
The Wildland Fire Education Working Team worked on many tasks this
year to improve team operations. These tasks included updating the
team’s strategic plan, handbook and team history to ensure
all information was pertinent and up-to-date. A plan for the distribution
for team products was developed and added to the team handbook.
The team also revised the charter and has submitted the new version
to the parent group for review. The task group organization begun
in FY 2003 continues to function well for the team with the National
Fire Messaging Task Group completing its work and a Training Development
Task Group was formed.
The team also experienced some membership changes this past year
with Maureen Brooks becoming the USFS representative, Lew Southard
serving as the team’s liaison for the WUIWT, and Germaine
White of the Consolidated Salish and Kootenai Tribes joining the
team as a tribal representative.
