FY2007 Accomplishment Report

Alaska Interagency Prevention Committee NWCG Funds utilized - $0

The WFEWT assisted the Alaska Interagency Prevention Committee in the development of localized fire messages. A team member traveled to Anchorage and presented the national fire messages and assisted in facilitating the development of localized messages for the agencies in Alaska – October 2006. A second team member facilitated a strategic planning session in February 2007.

Third International Fire Ecology and Management Congress NWCG Funds utilized - $5948

The NWCG WFEWT sponsored a special session at 3rd International Fire Ecology and Management Congress entitled “Building the Support you need: Incorporating education and communications into fire management programs.” The session was offered in two parts where the speakers spoke on the themes: Enabling people to become part of the solution: Bringing more people to the table; and Communicating the Hard Issues during the Incident. The Congress was held November 13-17, 2006 in San Diego, CA and was organized by the International Society of Fire Ecology. NWCG funds paid for speaker travel.

Interagency Mitigation, Prevention and Education Meeting NWCG Funds utilized - $1190
for state member travel

Three team members attended this meeting and presented at two sessions – October 2006, Phoenix, AZ. Continued involvement of the team includes the development of a national interagency fire prevention education framework.

P101 The revision to P101 Fire Prevention Education 1 was completed in FY07 and is now available for use. – No funds expended in 2007
P310 Fire Prevention Education Team Member course was completed and is now available for use. Two sessions of this course were offered nationally in FY 2007 and were hosted by the Forest Service –
No NWCG funds expended in 2007
P410 Fire Prevention Education Team Leader is currently being completed and is expected to be available in early CY 2008.
Funds expended in FY07 were $2500 in Forest Service funds
P301 The contract for the revision of P301 was begun in FY2007 and funds have been obligated. Work is expected to begin on the project – P301 Fire Prevention Education 2 – Program Planning – will begin in October 2007.
FY 07 funds expended were: $68,000 – NWCG; $59,000 – Forest Service; $30,000 - BLM

Communicators Guide revision
NWCG Funds utilized - $40,556

Researched, developed and produced by the NWCG Wildland Fire Education Working Team, the guide provides information about all aspects of wildland fire and has proven useful to practitioners from all disciplines. The 2007 version of the “Communicator’s Guide for Wildland Fire Management: Fire Education, Prevention and Mitigation Practices” replaces the version released in 2000, titled “Communicator’s Guide for Wildland Fire.” The team has distributed announcement and complimentary copies of the guide throughout the agencies. The guide is available for purchase through the National Symbols cache and will be available for downloading from the internet. This guide is also a recommended reference for the training course P410 Prevention Education Team Leader and will be a reference document for the revised P301 course.

Prevention Education Teams NWCG Funds utilized - $0

The National Fire Prevention Education Teams finished the second year of complete dispatching through the ROSS. The team completed and distributed a mobilization guide for the regional coordinators, team leaders and members. This guide will be reviewed in the fall of 2007 to prepare for CY2008. The Prevention Education Team Leader Guide was completed and incorporated into P410 and the PMS

Meetings NWCG Funds utilized - $5330

November, 2006 – San Diego
January, 2007 – Boise
May, 2007 – Missoula

The team also holds monthly conference calls.

The WFEWT welcomed new member – Leslie Fitzwater who represents the states in the Northeast. Travel for this member was paid for by the Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry, USFS.
