Mission Statement

The Interagency Leadplane Unit (ILU) provides national leadership in leadplane operations for the Interagency Aerial Supervision Subcommittee (IASS). The ILU promotes and enables safe, effective and efficient leadplane operations in support of retardant and water delivery and airspace coordination in fire environments. Primary objectives include:

A wildland firefighter watches and takes picture with cell phone of a single engine airtanker dropping water over landscape of smoke and flames.
  • Develop, maintain, update, and issue interagency leadplane guidance for wildland fire operations. Do this in coordination with the IASS.
  • Provide input into leadplane related revisions to the NWCG Standards for Aerial Supervision, including forms and job aids.
  • Solicit, identify, evaluate, and address issues related to wildland fire leadplane operations, including best practices, lessons learned, qualifications, safety, training, equipment, and procedures.
