Mission Statement

Mission Statement

The Fuels Management Subcommittee (FMSC) provides national leadership in the development of wildland fire standards to enable interoperability related to wildland fuels management programs under the common purpose of reducing risks of wildfire to communities while improving and maintaining ecosystem health. The FMSC is responsible for maintenance of all NWCG products and standards delegated to them within their content area.

Body

Primary Objectives

  • Develop, review, and maintain standards that are accurate, current, and aligned with the NWCG mission within the wildland fuels management content area as delegated by the Operations Management Committee (OMC).
  • Engage in effective coordination and communication among subcommittees and stakeholders to promote cross-functional collaboration, prevent duplication of effort, and support integrated standards development.
  • Assist the OMC as requested to ensure all standards, publications, incident positions, training courses, and any other work produced by the FMSC are fully vetted for alignment across the NWCG primary agencies.
  • Identify emerging issues within the committee’s area of expertise and elevate them to the OMC with appropriate context and recommendations.

RMC Safety Bulletin 26-001: Rhabdomyolysis in Wildland Firefighters

Date:  May 28, 2026
Questions?
Please contact: Risk Management Committee

The Risk Management Committee (RMC) has issued Safety Bulletin 26-001: Rhabdomyolysis in Wildland Firefighters. Research from 2016 to 2025 shows that 88 cases of rhabdomyolysis (rhabdo) were reported. Analysis of reports from eSafety, the Safety Management Information System (SMIS), and the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center (LLC) indicates that rhabdo is common during this time of year due to Work Capacity Tests and contributing factors such as weather, hydration, nutrition, and medication or supplement use.

RMC issued this safety bulletin to raise awareness in the Wildland Fire Community, and to provide research findings and educational resources that support reducing future cases of rhabdo.
