Course Description

S-443 is typically offered once a year to provide students with the knowledge and skills required of an Infrared Interpreter (IRIN) as well as how and where the IRIN fits into the information flow of an incident. The students use infrared imagery from the Phoenix system to interpret and map the heat perimeter and heat concentrations, calculate acreage burned and produce summary products. Understanding of topographic map reading and basic fire behavior are preferred but not required. The course combines lecture/discussion, multiple exercises, and there is a pass/fail final exam.

Upon completion of this course, the student will have the knowledge, skills, and resources to support wildland fire incidents as an IRIN trainee. This includes:

Special Cadre Considerations

The National Infrared Program Manager is responsible for selecting the cadre for the course, and will typically serve as lead instructor. All instructors will be fully qualified Infrared Interpreters (IRIN) with substantial incident experience as IRINs.

RMC Memorandum 26-02: SAFENET Modernization and SafeNetX Launch

The Risk Management Committee (RMC) is pleased to announce the launch of SafeNetX, the modernized safety reporting system now available to the wildland fire community. Effective June 15, 2026, SafeNetX enables reporting of unsafe, unhealthy, near-miss, and high-risk operations across wildland fire, all-hazard incidents, training, and related work environments.

SafeNetX is the result of a multi-agency modernization effort led by RMC, which began evaluating improvements to the legacy SAFENET system in 2021. To learn more, read the full RMC memorandum in the links provided.
