S-130, Firefighter Training (ILT)

Course Description

The intent of this course is to train new firefighters in basic firefighting skills. This includes a required field exercise that may be arduous in nature.

Course Objectives

Demonstrate the ability to construct fireline to required standards using various methods, tools and equipment, and techniques.

Prerequisite Training

Successful completion of S-190, Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior.

Lead instructor must be a qualified Single Resource Boss (CRWB, HEQB, ENGB, FELB, FIRB, and HMGB)

Special Delivery Considerations

S-190, Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior is a prerequisite and must have been successfully completed prior to taking the S-130, Firefighter Training course.

L-180, Human Factors on the Fireline, is no longer included as part of this course. Students that successfully complete S-130, Firefighter Training will no longer be given credit for completing L-180, Human Factors on the Fireline.

The L-180 course will now be presented as a standalone course. This can be accomplished through facilitation of an Instructor-Led version of the course or directing students to complete the Self-Directed (Online) version of the course. A new publication from the National Coordination System Committee (NCSC) is now available. The NWCG Aircraft Flight Schedule Form, PMS 249, will be used for aviation crews and dispatch to share flight information that is needed for resource tracking, and if needed, for emergency procedures.

New Glossary Term for Review

The Data Standards and Terminology Board is requesting feedback on a new glossary term: Resource Protection Measure (RPM).

The proposed definition is: Practical guidance provided for incident personnel in a manner in which incident objectives can be achieved while reducing impacts to identified resources across the landscape. RPMs are informed by, but not restricted to, Minimum Impact Strategies and Tactics (MIST).
