Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to perform the duties of the Crew Boss (CRWB) position, as described in the NWCG Incident Position Standards for Crew Boss, PMS-350-98. Topics include travel and check-in in, briefings, assigning tasks and assessing crew performance, implementing fire line duties, mop-up, firing operations, using aerial resources, medical emergencies, and wildland urban interface.

Course Objective

Evaluate, implement, and provide the rationale for the appropriate decisions to accomplish each of the following assignment objectives:
o Direct attack
o Firing operations
o Aerial resources
o Medical emergency
o Wildland-urban interface
o Mop-up

Prerequisite Qualifications Notes

Qualified as Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1).

Lead Instructor Minimum Qualifications
Lead instructor must be a qualified Strike Team Leader (STCR, STEQ, STEN) or Task Force Leader (TFLD).

Special Delivery Considerations

OLT Component

Students can access the online portion of the course at S-230 Crew Boss (Single Resource) (Blended-Online Component) 2023. Enrollment into the online component will require participants to obtain a user account for the NWCG Wildland Fire Learning Portal. The course coordinator should include instructions for completing the online component of the course in announcements or correspondence related to the course session.

The first part of the course consists of a self-directed online component which provides knowledge and concepts required to meet the responsibilities of the Crew Boss. Students must successfully complete all units and pass the assessment at the end. Successful completion of the online component is required to be admitted into the instructor led component of this course.

At the conclusion of the online portion, as documentation that the student has completed the first units of the course and are prepared to continue with the exercises and scenarios in the ILT, students will notify the ILT instructor or coordinator and provide a digital copy of the online training completion memo to be enrolled in an ILT.

OLT completion memo is valid for 90 days after which the OLT must be retaken.

Incident Operations Subcommittee Updates the Next Generation Position Task Book for FFT1

The NWCG Incident Operations Subcommittee (IOSC) has updated the NWCG Position Task Book for Firefighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) (FFT1), PMS 311‑14. The FFT1 Position Task Book transitioned to the Next Generation (Next Gen PTB) format in June 2025 through the Incident Performance and Training Modernization effort. Since then, IOSC has received feedback from the wildland fire community regarding coding for one of the tasks. Task #13 has been updated to include the option of evaluation in a simulation.

NEW! S-212, Intermediate Faller (Online) Course Available Now

NWCG is pleased to announce that the new S‑212, Intermediate Faller (Online), course is now available on the Wildland Fire Learning Portal (WFLP). This second course in the series provides students with the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties of an Intermediate Faller (FAL2), as described in the FAL2 Incident Position Description. This course is intended for individuals seeking to advance from Basic Faller (FAL3) to FAL2.

S‑212, Intermediate Faller is a fully online, self‑paced training program consisting of 13 units. Learners will engage with interactive, scenario‑based content designed to progressively build foundational skills and knowledge essential for the FAL2 role.

Students must be qualified as a Basic Faller (FAL3) prior to enrolling in S‑212, Intermediate Faller course.

Any changes to qualification pathways will take effect with the next update of the NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Position Qualifications, PMS 310-1, scheduled for January 2027.
