Air Tactical Group Supervisor*

ATGS Position Description: The Air Tactical Group Supervisor (ATGS) reports to the Air Operations Branch Director on Type 1 and Type 2 incidents and to the Incident Commander or Operations on initial attack or Type 3 incidents. The ATGS is responsible for managing the incident airspace and coordinating the fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft operations over an incident. (See NWCG Interagency Aerial Supervision Guide, PMS 505. Note: Aerial Supervision Modules (ASM) can function as an ATGS.)

The Air Tactical Group Supervisor (ATGS) coordinates incident airspace, manages incident air traffic, and is the link between ground personnel and incident aircraft. The ATGS is an airborne firefighter who coordinates, assigns, and evaluates the use of aerial resources in support of incident objectives. The ATGS supervises the Leadplane Pilot (LPIL), Aerial Supervision Module (ASM), and Helicopter Coordinator (HLCO) positions when activated. The ATGS reports to an Incident Commander (IC) on initial attack and the Operations Section Chief (OSC), Air Operations Branch Director (AOBD), or operational designee on extended attack and complex incidents (Type 1, 2, or 3). The ATGS works in the Air Operations functional area.

The Forest Service and Department of Interior are enabled by Administratively Determined Pay Plans (AD Pay Plans) to hire persons for temporary duration for the following reasons:

  1. To cope with a sudden and unexpected emergency caused by a fire, or extreme fire potential, flood, storm, or any other all-hazard emergency that threatens damage to federally protected property, has the potential to cause loss of life, serious injury, public health risk, or damage to natural or cultural resources unless brought under immediate control.
  2. To provide emergency assistance to states under formalized agreements.
  3. To meet mission assignments issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Incident Business Committee (IBC) reviews positions annually and establishes pay rate classifications for each position.

IPTM aims to transition NWCG’s training and qualification system to a performance-based model by updating position descriptions, Incident Position Standards, Next Generation Position Task Books (Next Gen PTBs), and training where needed.

RMC Safety Bulletin 26-001: Rhabdomyolysis in Wildland Firefighters

The Risk Management Committee (RMC) has issued Safety Bulletin 26-001: Rhabdomyolysis in Wildland Firefighters. Research from 2016 to 2025 shows that 88 cases of rhabdomyolysis (rhabdo) were reported. Analysis of reports from eSafety, the Safety Management Information System (SMIS), and the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center (LLC) indicates that rhabdo is common during this time of year due to Work Capacity Tests and contributing factors such as weather, hydration, nutrition, and medication or supplement use.

RMC issued this safety bulletin to raise awareness in the Wildland Fire Community, and to provide research findings and educational resources that support reducing future cases of rhabdo.

NWCG is pleased to announce the new D-110, Expanded Dispatch Recorder (Instructor-led) course is now available on the Wildland Fire Learning Portal (WFLP). Developed through the National Coordination System Committee, this course introduces the structure and function of expanded dispatch, the qualities of an effective dispatcher, and provides hands-on experience with the Interagency Resource Ordering Capability (IROC) system. 

The D-110, Expanded Dispatch Recorder course aligns with the competencies and duties outlined in the NWCG Incident Position Standards for Expanded Dispatch Recorder, PMS 350-59, and is designed for individuals with no prior experience who may be called upon to support dispatch operations.
