NWCG Glossary of Wildland Fire, PMS 205

Overview

The NWCG Glossary of Wildland Fire provides an extensive listing of approved terms and definitions used by the NWCG community. It contains terms commonly used by NWCG in the areas of wildland fire and incident management and is not intended to list all terms used by NWCG groups and member agencies. The NWCG has directed that all committee and subgroup product glossaries be contained within the NWCG Glossary of Wildland Fire to maintain definition consistency and clarity among documents.

Comments, questions, and recommendations shall be submitted to the appropriate agency program manager assigned to the Data Standards and Terminology Board (DSTB).

source (documentation)	Approved	Supporting documentation on process used to map the WUI
sustainability (water source)	Approved	A measure of the refresh rate of the water source.
Is Funded		Field marked true if all approvals are complete. False if otherwise
non-land-based	Approved	An organizational unit that may be used for other incident types such as severity or support records.
fire discovery date	Approved	The day the fire was confirmed to exist or was reported as discovered.

National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service Identifier
name (water source)	Approved	Name of the water source.

Year-Round Data Collection Station		A permanent 24-hour observing station.

severe winter weather (event)	Approved	An event dealing with response to severe winter weather such as blizzards, heavy snow, or ice storms.
air accident (event)	Approved	An event dealing with an accident or mishap involving aircraft.
Is Vegetation Departure Manual		Indicates if the vegetation departure has been entered manually
Regional Approval Date		Day/Month/Year officially accepted by the region program manager as meeting all region requirements to receive funds in the planned year.
Local Approval Date		Day/Month/Year officially accepted by the local manager as meeting all local requirements to receive funds in the planned year.

Potential Operational Delineation line	In Development	Depicts linear potential control features that may form wildland fire potential operational delineation polygon boundaries.
Funding Unit		Unit providing funding for treatment or activity. May or may not be the same as location unit.
wildland urban interface polygon	In Development	A spatial representation of the extent of the wildland fire urban interface as a polygon.
wildland fire perimeter polygon	In Development	A spatial representation of the daily and final fire perimeter as a polygon.
wildland fire location point	In Development	The spatial representation of a fire occurrence as a point.

tender type (water source)	Approved	Largest tender type that can use the water source.
jurisdictional unit polygon	In Development	A polygon depicting areas of wildland fire jurisdiction to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Unit level.
initial attack frequency zone polygon	In Development	A polygon depicting an area in which the FAA/DOI/USDA annually assign initial attack frequencies for incident needs.
Geographic Area Coordination Center boundary polygon	In Development	A polygon depicting geographic area boundaries.
fuels treatment polygon	In Development	A polygon representing the area(s) of unique fuels treatments during a single timeframe.
fire restriction polygon	In Development	A polygon depicting areas where measures have been taken by jurisdictional agencies to impose bans and standards of use on certain human acitvities that could lead to the cause of wildlland fire.
aviation obstruction polygon	In Development	A geospatial reference to physical features that may present a hazard to pilots during aviation operations displayed as a polygon.
aviation obstruction point	In Development	A geospatial reference to physical features that may present a hazard to pilots during aviation operations displayed as a point.
aviation obstruction line	In Development	A geospatial reference to physical features that may present a hazard to pilots during aviation operations displayed as a line.
aviation activity polygon	In Development	A geospatial layer reference to activities that that may present a hazard to pilots during aviation operations displayed as a polygon.
aviation activity point	In Development	A geospatial layer reference to activities that that may present a hazard to pilots during aviation operations displayed as a point.
