Off-Season Fitness

 

“Fitness can neither be bought nor bestowed. Like honor it must be earned.”

Wildland firefighters know that physical fitness plays an important role in our job performance and our ability to stay safe. The level of fitness required for the job is one that requires maintenance during the off-season.  The success relies fully on an individual’s commitment, motivation, and participation.  Some individuals find it helpful to exercise with someone, especially another firefighter. This partnership provides accountability and opportunity for personal and cohesive growth.

It’s important when transitioning at the end of the fire season to allow time for rest and recuperation. An initial 2-week rest/recovery phase is strongly recommended. Initial concentration should be on identifying any injuries sustained during the fire season that need mitigation and/or rehabilitation. Allow the body to relax, physically and mentally.

After that, shift to a program designed to develop and maintain a baseline fitness level in preparation for the pre-season phase and optimal fitness level for fire season. Build flexibility into your program to encourage cross-training and a diversity of activities that are fun and enjoyable. Once exercise is implemented, the primary focus should be on adhering to low-impact cardiovascular activities, muscle balance, and good flexibility.

NEW! S-490, Advanced Fire Behavior Calculations (Blended) Available Now

NWCG is pleased to announce that the new S-490, Advanced Fire Behavior Calculations (Blended), 2026 course is now available.

This training includes performance-based activities that allow students to apply the knowledge and concepts required for the Fire Behavior Analyst (FBAN), Long Term Fire Analyst (LTAN), and Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 1 (RXB1) positions. It supports individuals working towards these incident qualifications.

This blended course begins with a self-paced online training (OLT) in the Wildland Fire Learning Portal (WFLP), followed by an in-person instructor-led training (ILT).

NEW! S-231, Engine Boss Course Available Now

NWCG is pleased to announce the new S-231, Engine Boss (Single Resource) course is now available on the Wildland Fire Learning Portal (WFLP). Developed through the Incident Performance and Training Modernization (IPTM) effort, this training supports individuals working towards Engine Boss, Single Resource (ENGB) incident qualifications. 

This is a performance-based instructor-led training (ILT) that focuses on the application of ENGB responsibilities during wildland fire operations, emphasizing readiness, information gathering, risk management, engine tactics, and Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) operations. Trainees apply these skills through scenario-based group work and an optional field day that reinforces hands-on engine operation tasks.
