Emergencies on the Ramp

 

An emergency on the ramp can occur at any time. Having a plan and maintaining situational awareness can allow staff to take quick and effective action and can slow the acceleration of an accident.

Discuss potential emergency situations that can occur at a fixed-wing base and how to handle them.

  • Does your base have a security plan?
    • How often is the plan reviewed?
    • Discuss some of the roles of staff and possible situations that could affect the security at your base.
  • Does your base have a safety plan? Discuss all current locations of:
    • First aid kits.
    • Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
    • Fire extinguishers.
    • Emergency eyewash and showers.
    • Blood-borne pathogens kits.
    • Any other safety equipment available at your base.
  • Is there an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), First Responder, or someone trained in First Aid/CPR on duty daily?
    • Aircraft.
    • Vehicle/fuel truck.
    • Pumping equipment.
    • Building.
  • Is there anyone at your base with a serious allergy issue or negative reaction to insect sting?
    • Is there a possibility for venomous snakes on the grounds?
  • What are the procedures for something entering your operational area?
    • A possibility of an unauthorized vehicle/aircraft?
    • Large animals?
  • How long has it been since ramp personnel had fire extinguisher training?
  • What is the base protocol for dealing with any type of fire within your ramp area?
    • Aircraft.
    • Vehicle/fuel truck.
    • Pumping equipment.
    • Building.

NWCG is excited to announce that Quarter Three materials for the 2025/2026 Wildland Fire Leadership Campaign are now available. This annual initiative offers all students of leadership and wildland fire management an opportunity to engage with essential leadership skills and knowledge needed to lead effectively in dynamic environments.

Quarter Three materials focus on Leadership Level 3: Leader of People (Develop Intent). Leadership Level 3 is where your values, your team, and your influence come together. Leaders of People put their teams first, build trust, and lead with authenticity. They mentor future leaders and shape decisions up and down the chain.

NEW! S-490, Advanced Fire Behavior Calculations (Blended) Available Now

NWCG is pleased to announce that the new S-490, Advanced Fire Behavior Calculations (Blended), 2026 course is now available.

This training includes performance-based activities that allow students to apply the knowledge and concepts required for the Fire Behavior Analyst (FBAN), Long Term Fire Analyst (LTAN), and Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 1 (RXB1) positions. It supports individuals working towards these incident qualifications.

This blended course begins with a self-paced online training (OLT) in the Wildland Fire Learning Portal (WFLP), followed by an in-person instructor-led training (ILT).
