Briefing Administratively Determined (AD) and Detailed Employees

Everybody is responsible for briefing incoming employees

Throughout the year, airtanker bases may have multiple AD and detailed employees come in from other bases or agencies. It is the responsibility of the Airtanker Base Manager (ATBM), Seat Manager (SEMG), Ramp Manager (RAMP), and Fixed Wing Parking Tenders (FWPT) to ensure that all incoming personnel are briefed on local base policies, facilities, and protocols. A thorough briefing must communicate all the critical information that visiting employees need to know to do their work safely while away from their home unit.

What an AD needs to know

Upon arriving at your base, give AD and detailed employees a brief tour to ensure they are familiar with the facility. The initial tour should include restrooms, exercise areas, first aid kit, eye wash station, and ramp orientation.
Additionally, inform AD and detailers about and complete the following:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) locations
  • Spill kit location
  • Pumpkin times and fire code locations
  • Expectations of radio communications
  • Review and sign the Hotloading and Simultaneous Fueling plan
  • Review and sign the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan
  • Review Area Base Operation Plan

Discussion Questions:

There are many things to consider in assisting a new employee. Consider the following safety questions about your airtanker base:

  • In the event of a fuel or retardant spill, what is the protocol for safe cleanup?
  • What is your base’s Crash Rescue Plan?
  • How is the rotation of your ramp unique in its operations?
  • What potential hazards exist at your airtanker base that may not exist at other airtanker bases?
