Progression Map

Note: The Situation Map has been deprecated as a map standard. The Operations map should be used as an acceptable substitute for task book purposes.

Product Description

The Progression Map shows the areas affected by the incident over time. A copy of the map is required to be included in the incident documentation package.

Target Audience

Planning Section, Public Information Officer, Incident Commander, host agencies, public.  

Guidelines

  • Can be scalable from letter (8 ½” x 11”) to Arch E (36” x 48”) size.
  • If numerous time periods are shown, standardized color ramps are effective in showing trends rather than discrete values.
  • Color ramps should be distinguishable to individuals with color vision deficiency. Suggested color ramps include Point Cloud 1 in ArcGIS Online and Spectrum by Wavelength-Full Bright in ArcGIS Pro as they closely resemble the Turbo color ramp recommended in Consistency in Pyrocartography Starts with Color.
  • Map extent should cover area directly affected by the incident.
  • Distribution through the web should be considered. 

Standard Elements

All map products produced should include the STANDL-SGD cartographic elements.

Data

  • Point of origin, if known and not under investigation.
  • Base map that does not distract from fire polygons (shaded relief or topography).
  • Key geographic features (e.g., mountain peaks, hydrography, valleys, and major roads).
  • Perimeter or Progression data for each time period, changing from cool to warm colors for the most recent data.
  • Other Situation Unit Leader (SITL)-requested data.

These are examples from actual incidents and may include non-standard elements.

Also note that examples use the standard symbols at the time of their creation and may not reflect the current GeoOps symbology. Map elements, incident features, and composition remain consistent across these visual changes.

Updated! L-280, Followership to Leadership (Instructor-led) Course

NWCG is pleased to announce the updated L-280, Followership to Leadership (Instructor-led) course is now available. L-280 is intended for operational personnel at the Firefighter Type 1 level, and for individuals pursuing Leadership Level 2, New Leader. 

This instructor-led course is a primer on leadership and the second formal course in the Wildland Fire Leadership Development Program. It helps emerging leaders build the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to lead effectively in high-risk environments.

Equipment Advisory 25-01: Pre-2006 Fire Shelter Degradation and Discontinuation of Use

Equipment Technology Committee 

The Equipment Technology Committee (ETC) has released Equipment Advisory 25-01: Pre-2006 Fire Shelter Degradation and Discontinuation of Use. This advisory recommends all pre-2006 fire shelters should be removed from service by January 1, 2026.

This advisory recommends firefighters and fire managers to:

  • Inspect fire shelters immediately
  • Replace and destroy any pre-2006 shelters (identified by white or pink insert label)
  • Order replacements as needed

NEW! S-219, Firing Operations (Blended) Now Available

The S-219, Firing Operations (Blended) course is now available on the Wildland Fire Learning Portal. Developed through the Incident Performance and Training Modernization (IPTM) effort, this training supports individuals working towards Firing Boss, Single Resource (FIRB) incident qualifications.

This blended course combines online and instructor-led training to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties of the FIRB, as described in the NWCG Incident Position Standards for Firing Boss, Single Resource, PMS 350-105.

Any changes to qualification pathways will take effect with the next update of the NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Position Qualifications, PMS 310-1, scheduled for January 2026.
